In spite of all the ways we now connect with each other – texting, instant messaging, chatting, social networking, tweeting, emailing; social isolation and loneliness is on the rise. In a study of 34,000 Canadian university students, almost 2/3rds reported feeling "very lonely" in the past 12 months. More Canadians than ever live alone, and almost one-quarter describe themselves as lonely. As dangerous to our physical health as smoking 15 cigarettes a day, loneliness is becoming a serious epidemic. So what is making us feel so lonely, isolated, and disconnected in our communities and what can we do about it?
